Welcome
Our home base in western Colorado has changed immensely the past few years. While
many areas have experienced extreme drought during 2021, those of us in western Colo-
rado have been in a constant state of drought since as early as 2012. 2020 and 2021 have
both been record-breaking drought years not only for lack of precipitation, but lack of
snowpack and corresponding river flow as well.
Additionally, the “great COVID-19 land rush of 2020” impacted our area and many of our
long-term leases were sold. Continued dry conditions paired with land availability in our
immediate area has led us to make the difficult decision to dramatically reduce our cow
numbers and adjust our business model.
Over the years, we have put an incredible amount of selection pressure on raising func-
tional cattle that work well in almost any environment. Selecting sound, maternal and
easy-fleshing females has always been important to our program. Producing stout, bal-
anced bulls that can get the job done on the high desert in western Colorado, southern
Utah and surrounding states is what pays the bills around here.
Sure, we have produced and sold some excellent females over the years, but our No. 1 goal
MORGAN & DAN MCCARTY was always to make a female that will raise a whopper of a bull calf that can make a pos-
itive impact on the beef industry – and that’s exactly what these females we are offering
can do.
Calving season has traditionally started in late January and both cows and heifers must
calve unassisted with little or no help. We have never calved in a barn and rely on the cow
to do her job of getting her calf up and nursing, even on bitter cold nights in sub-zero
weather.
These cattle have summered on both irrigated and mountain pastures and are fed native
hay in the winter. Protein supplement is offered only when the conditions require it. These
cattle are not pampered and must earn their keep. Since we’ve been forced to cut cow
numbers since 2012 because of continued drought, the older cows in the offering are still
here because they excelled in getting the job done.
The cattle in the offering with “155” in the name or a 155 brand come out of our coopera-
tor herd from Tiana Fiou at the Fiou Ranch. These cattle run right along side the McCarty
females and have been managed together for nearly 10 years. Many of these cattle have
been bred up from a purebred Angus herd.
We aren’t leaving the business that we both love nor are we leaving the Gelbvieh breed.
We’re actually quite bullish on where this industry is headed in the next couple years and
think there are tremendous opportunities ahead. We are keeping a few around and plan
to rebuild when conditions allow, however the cattle in this offering represent the top end
of the herd and we think this is a fantastic opportunity for fellow Gelbvieh and Balancer
breeders.
Dan & Morgan McCarty Thank you for your interest in our program. We hope you appreciate the quality of this
970-481-5217 offering and look forward to visiting with you.
