WELCOME
WELCOME
Welcome to our 47th Performance sale to be held February 21th, 2022 at Kist
Livestock Auction, Mandan ND.
Like for many of you, 2021 was a terribly dry year in our area. Most of the summer we were at about 40% of normal pre-
cipitation and that was after another abnormally dry year in 2020. For many hauling water and readjusting pasture rota-
tions became a real challenge. Instead of counting round bales of hay per acre to measure production we went to counting
how many acres it took to make a bale! Despite to challenges of little grass and high temperatures our breed back was
good. Weaning weights varied widely depending on precipitation. Perhaps the biggest change you will see in our 2022 sale
offering is that we weaned calves the first week of September instead of October as is normal practice. The bulls have really
responded to this management change, and you will notice heavier yearling weights.
We have an outstanding set of bulls to offer this year. Several new sire groups will highlight our offering. The Growth
Fund sons are long bodied, thick made, bigger framed bulls with great dispositions. Commodore is another new sire for us
in 2022. His sons are extra long middled, wide based with great dispositions and big scrotals. Alternative was mostly used
on heifers. His progeny are super thick, tame, moderate framed and have loads of carcass merit. We also have smaller sire
groups by E & B Plus One and Sydgen Enhance plus some standbys from years past like Niagara, Achievement and our
own compliment of walking herd bulls. Remember we have stacked low birth- high growth genetics for generations so you
will find lots of low birth weight bulls with high performance numbers and superior carcass traits.
Our reputation has long been built around the TOKACH females. Hard working, low input females that have been bred
and developed to run in big country with a minimum of care. They are big outlined, broody females that carry the trade-
mark “TOKACH FEMALE” look. Our 2022 offering of bred replacement heifers were synchronized and A. I. bred to
either Tehama Tahoe, a widely used calving and maternal bull from the Select Sires stud or E & B Plus One who was the
heaviest used calving ease bulls in the breed for the past three years.
All the registered cattle will have genomic enhanced EPDs once again which provides you with the most accurate and up
to date genetic predications the industry has to offer.
Video’s of the sale offering will be posted on DVAuction just like they have in the past for your viewing and buying conve-
nience. Richard & Ben would welcome phone calls on any of the sale offering. They see and feed the sale offering daily and
know them better than anyone. They may be a bit biased knowing the genetics behind the sale offering but they will be
honest in their opinions. We also would encourage you to stop out at the ranch at any time to see the bulls in person and
the environment they were raised in.
The sale cattle have been handled the same as in the past. The cattle have not been on creep feed and are on mostly home
grown feed with a protein and mineral supplement. The bulls were weaned in early September and the bred heifers taken
off grass on December 1st. Birth weight are taken with a scale, weaning weights taken at weaning and yearling weights
taken just in time for this catalog to go to press.
The cattle can be seen at Kist’s Livestock Auction in Mandan from February 18th until sale time. Prior to that time, they
and the cowherd can be seen at the ranch at your convenience. Thank you to all our customers.
