“You must depend on your seedstock provider(s) to make the most of the genetic changes
you desire in your herd. I want my bull provider to:
• Judiciously use the tools at his disposal.
• Produce bulls that will produce good mother cows – moderate in size and milk,
and that will work with my environment and management.
• The seedstock provider must be a low-input operator with his cowherd. Since I
don’t pamper my cows, I don’t want him to pamper his.
• That provider must: keep accurate records and report 100% of records to the
breed association; help me maintain a reasonable level of heterosis in my herd; be satisfied
with slow, sustained, balanced progress; and be honest about genetic antagonisms.
