11 VEGAS GOLD
John Amber Champagne NASMDA
15.1 HH 1100 lbs. Age: 13
Vegas Gold is a 13-year-old, 15.1 HH, 1,100-lb. gaited John mule. He is
out of a Champagne Walking Horse mare. I don’t know his full history.
He came out of Kentucky, where he was being ridden and coon hunted by
an elderly gentleman. When the owner died, his widow sold the mule to a
friend, who in turn sold it to the horse trainer that I purchased him from
Here is a link to the YouTube video from the horse trainer in Kentucky:

an amateur photographer. I bought Vegas Gold to use as my photo plat-
form on my back country adventures. But, I’m old, fat and short legged.
And he is just a little too tall for me. I’ve since found a shorter mule that
works better for me. And, I’ve decided to sell Vegas. To fi nish Vegas’ west-
ern trails training, I’ve places him with renowned Utah horse trainer Ole
Lindgren. He’ll put the fi nal touches on him. Here’s what Ole has to say:
“Vegas is one of those mules that fi ts well into any riding adventure. He is
just the right age, just the right size, and loaded with extras! He has carried
guests on hunting trips and provided therapy for wounded warriors. He
can be trusted with my 7-year-old daughter on pack trips into the deep
desert, yet has all the drive to satisfy an aggressive rough country explorer.
He has never bucked, and shows no aggressive disposition in the pens.
He is a beautiful, metallic sheen Champaign color that is truly unique. He
is gaited with a smooth and easy ground-covering stride. No problem with
dogs and no funny quirks that set him off. This mule is an honest boy who
has seen more rough country miles than the average top mule. If you are
looking for a mule whose only draw back is an ugly tail, this mule will not
disappoint.” About that tail; Just before I bought him, Vegas was placed
in a corral with a bottle-fed calf. That calf sucked/chewed Vegas’ tail off.
It’s going to be a while before it returns to it’s former glory! Vegas will
remain in training with Ole until the sale in May. You can be assured that
he will be something extra special by then. Maybe, he’s the one for you. In
the meantime, you can see more of Vegas’ adventures by following me on
Facebook . I’ll be posting lot’s of rides with Vegas in them. In fact, I have
already posted there: https://www.facebook.com/don.davis.984
