Gelbvieh Breeder Recognized for Outstanding Productivity
NEWS
ZIMMERMAN RANCH For Immediate Release
August 28, 2024
DAWSON, ND
Zimmerman Ranch of Dawson, ND, has been recognized by the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) for their outstanding
commitment to maternal efficiency, with 24 Gelbvieh cows achieving the esteemed titles of Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinc-
tion. These designations highlight the exceptional productivity and profitability of Gelbvieh cattle, known as “The Continen-
tal Breed of Choice.”
Maternal efficiency is a cornerstone of profitable beef production, with nearly 60 percent of the cost per pound of beef tied
to the cow herd. Fertility, calving ease, milk production, growth, and carcass cutability significantly influence profitability,
especially in retained ownership systems. Gelbvieh cattle consistently excel in these traits, offering commercial cattlemen the
added benefits of fast growth and superior carcass characteristics.
The “Dam of Merit” award recognizes cows meeting strict standards for early puberty, regular calving intervals, and
above-average weaning weights on at least three calves. This year, just 5.8 percent of the 32,649 active Gelbvieh cows in the
breed achieved this distinction. Even more exclusive, the “Dam of Distinction” designation celebrates cows with long-term
productivity, requiring the same rigorous standards for a minimum of eight calves. Only 1.1 percent of active cows qualify for
this elite honor.
As the industry continues to prioritize efficient beef production, Gelbvieh cattle are well-positioned to expand their influence,
thanks to their strong maternal attributes and economic benefits.
