Welcome
We at Milk Creek Reds invite you to view our offering for the 2025 Bull Sale. Our hope is that as you view the information in this catalog that
you will be able to see differences within the offering but also that there is consistency throughout the offering.
Tena reminded us that it has been 40 years sine we purchased our first registered Red Angus females. It is hard to believe that we have been
in this business for that many decades. We have seen many changes in the cattle, the industry and our business over these years. One of the
many things that we have discovered is that even with all these changes we still have not figured out how to breed the perfect cow or bull. This
can be disappointing and challenging at the same time. In the end, there really isn’t a perfect animal that we can breed because as a breeder
we are very critical in evaluating cattle and thus we will always find that something could be better. Instead, our philosophy has been to breed
cattle that are very functional, adaptable, and profitable to our operation as well as our customers operations that have the same business
philosophies.
This year’s offering was selected from over 200 herd mates which has allowed these bulls to be consistent in type and kind with a variety of
different pedigrees represented. Amongst the tried and true reference sires that we have utilized in the past are a few new A.I. and clean up
sires, whose offspring will be the first offered from our program. The progeny from all the reference sires have a common denominator, which
is to produce functional, profitable females that will generate as much production within their environment with as few as inputs possible.
Eastern Montana experienced another drought and that meant the bulls weaned off a little lighter than we would have hoped but when they
were able to get some nutrition in front of them they exhibited good compensatory gain. The bulls are being fed by Eric and Andrea Bowman
and family at Rhame, North Dakota. The Bowmans have been feeding our bulls for 30 + years and have developed this set of bulls to gain
around 2.5 pounds per day but with the nice winter they have been doing a little better. While being developed with longevity in mind, the bulls
are still fed in a way that allows them to express their gain potential.
This year could be a pivotal year for our breed when it comes to marketing commercial feeder calves sired by Red Angus bulls. Our breed
association has been making inroads with feeders and packers to open up more opportunity for red cattle to be priced based on genetic merit
not hide color. New packing plants are being opened and more feeders are educated on the quality of Red Angus feeder cattle with hopes of
improving pricing on a more competitive level with black hided cattle. Change usually takes time and in this industry sometimes it doesn’t
move as fast as we would like.
The bulls will sell in catalog order. We begin the sale with a pen of high indexing moderate birth weight bulls and follow with a group of high
indexing, low birth weight heifer bulls. After these first two pens we arrange the remaining pens by sire groups allowing for good bulls to be
cataloged from the beginning to the end. Some pens will have a mix of one or more sires if there isn’t enough progeny from a sire group to fill
a pen. We hope that as you view the bulls live, via video or within these pages you will find consistency in type and kind throughout.
Additional information such as scrotal measurements, and frame scores will be posted on our website as well as DV auction as they become
available. If we can provide any additional information that will aide you in your selection of genetics do not hesitate to give us a call. Our goal
is to provide you with the tools needed to make the best
selection possible. We look forward to visiting with each of
you and seeing those that can make it to the sale.
