Fall 2018 – Red Hill Farms Bred Commerical Females
Kelly Smith Family (Franklin, KY)
Kelly Smith and his family operate both spring and fall calving herds in Simpson County,
KY. In Kelly’s youth he was involved in a purebred seedstock operation; however, he and
his family are now dedicated commercial producers. The Smith family runs a pasture based
operation with minimum hay feeding. In fact, almost all the hay fed in the operation is
purchased. This model has been utilized in an effort to run as many cows as possible on
their acreage. Kelly has been on the Red Hill program for several years utilizing Red Angus
and SimAngus bulls as well as semen on many of the Red Hill herdsires.
The Smith operation is one that challenges females because only pasture and limited hay
feeding is the norm. Females are bred during a 60-day breeding season and strict culling is
practiced. Our experience is that heifers or cows purchased from the Smith Family seem to
thrive in their new environments. The kind of environment and management scheme used
on this farm is one that tends to identify the females with superior fertility and eliminate
those with inherent problems.
The Smith Family retains and fi nishes all their steers and heifers not used as replacements
with Tri-County Feeders in southwest Iowa. Because of their emphasis on more moderate
sized cows, their cattle are most often fi nished at lighter weights than industry average.
However, Kelly says he has been pleased with the increased income that retaining owner-
ship of his cattle has provided. Kelly is offering a unique group of bred females to calve in
the spring. It is not common to fi nd young cows of this genetic level offered for sale.
Kelly seems to be making a real sacrifi ce of outstanding females to make this sale success-
ful since it was his idea that we should offer this outstanding set of commercial replace-
ment females along with bulls in our fall sale.
