Jay Price and Family (Liberty, KY)
Jay Price is a retired agriculture teacher who had tremendous infl uence on many students
in Casey County. After retirement, he has continued to counsel with many of his former
students who are farming, particularly those involved in beef cattle production. In January
of 2018, Jay was inducted into the Kentucky Cattleman’s Association Hall of Fame.

Although Jay was heavily involved with his beef cattle operation before retirement, he has
become a full time cattle farmer since he retired from teaching. Jay has always been a stu-
dent of forage production, and his forage program is one of the best in Kentucky. He uses
beef cattle as a means of harvesting and profi ting from his forage program. Jay switched
to a fall calving season several years ago, and he now breeds for only 60 days. He takes
pride in a highly fertile herd with most of his cows calving in the fi rst 30 days of the calving
season.

From a genetics standpoint, Jay has been on the Red Hill program for 15 years. He always
purchases bulls that rank at the top of their contemporary groups with an EPD profi le to fi t
his needs. Jay has concentrated on having balanced problem free or “user friendly” genet-
ics. He keeps excellent records on his cattle, and he has continually retained replacement
heifers from his most productive cows. Jay has blended Red Angus, Angus and SimAngus
genetics in an effort to take optimal advantage of hybrid vigor. The heifers consigned by
the Price family have been selected from their replacement heifer group. The cow herd has
a high percentage of young females; otherwise, Jay would not be offering this outstanding
group of heifers.
