Philosophy of our Program Southern Reds

                        How We Develop Our Bulls

We believe bulls are athletes. We want our bulls to be tested and tough to varying
conditions. We want them to have the adequate nutrition to develop healthy ru-
mens and all potential muscle expression, but growth should come from grazing
and not from artificial means unless absolutely needed. We breed for fleshing
ability, naturally, as the bulls grow joints, tendons, and ligaments. Our bulls are
not pushed for short term quick growth which can add extra weight that stresses
their joints and makes them prone to break down and have long-term physical
        issues.

All of our bulls are 100% forage raised. We require that bulls maintain on dormant
stockpile post-weaning, which quickly sorts the keeper bulls from the steers.
During this time, even the best bulls do not gain abundantly and so must have the
ability to exhibit compensatory gains when better quality forage is available. We
believe this prepares the bulls for tough environments. By our bulls seeing adver-
sity and “bad days,” we ensure they will integrate into any commercial program
regardless of geography and environmental conditions.

For the last 90-120 days prior to the sale, we like to run our bulls on growing cool
season grass. This is a Wheat/Oat/Clover/Ryegrass mixture that allows the bulls to
experience compensatory gain following dormant forage. This year, we experi-
enced major drought and so the bulls were supplemented with 5 lbs of average
quality alfalfa daily for a 45 day stretch when forage was limited. This is always
our backup plan if we run short on growing forage, but in normal rainfall years this
        is not needed.

The bulls are tested across multiple types of terrain as they are moved to multiple
leases as they graze. They are very horse-broke and are comfortable being hauled
regularly. We recommend when buying single bulls, to immediately put with oth-
er cattle as soon as they are unloaded. We breed these bulls to have herd mentali-
ties and so they have rarely been alone in their lifetime.
